Hi, I’m Trent.

I’m a visual artist and teacher originally from Harlingen, Texas. I currently live and work in Houston, Texas, and am the person behind Foreground Furniture.

I’ve always been interested in the way people use the spaces around them. My artwork looks at how we move through the world around us and how the built environment pushes us in one direction or another. I bring that same perspective into the workshop and my designs. I think about what people actually do at home, what changes over time, and how furniture can help without getting in the way.

I studied Photography and Digital Media at the University of Houston, then earned my MFA in Photography from Parsons in New York. I exhibit my artwork as much as possible and teach young adults throughout Houston. This keeps me curious, helps me ask better questions, and reminds me to stay open to changing my mind. I carry that into everything I make for Foreground Furniture.

Foreground is an intentionally small collection of made-to-order pieces. This allows me to spend more time on the proportions, materials, and the little details that make something feel right in a room. I want each piece to solve a specific need, but I also want it to be something you enjoy looking at every day.

How I approach the work

Look closely. Make it simple.

I pay attention

I spend a lot of time noticing how people move through rooms and cities, what they reach for, and what gets in the way. My art taught me to look closely. Furniture gives me a way to turn those observations into something useful.

Things should be able to change

I don’t think a home should have to stay arranged one way forever. Foreground pieces can shift with new artwork, new routines, and whatever you decide the wall needs next.

I like keeping things simple

Good plywood, straightforward hardware, and construction you can understand. I’d rather spend time getting a few good ideas right than fill the shop with things I don’t believe in.
